The release upgrade fails because your /etc/apt/sources.list file is
missing an entry for the main section of the Ubuntu archive.  You need
some lines like this in it:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-updates main
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-updates main
