This was fixed in 2.85.10, in which version `Recommends: exim4' was
changed to `Suggests: default-mta', see https://bugs.debian.org/599667

Title:
  apt-listchanges installation on (k)ubuntu 10.10 has wrong dependencies

Status in apt-listchanges package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: apt-listchanges

  package: apt-listchanges
  version: 2.84
  architecture: amd64

  detailed description:

  When I try to install apt-listchanges on (k)ubuntu 10.10 it tries to
  install two mail-transfer-agents (exim4 and postfix):

  <cut>
  michel at zeil:~$ sudo aptitude install apt-listchanges
  The following NEW packages will be installed:
    apt-listchanges bsd-mailx{a} exim4{a} exim4-base{a} exim4-config{ab} exim4-daemon-light{ab} postfix{ab}
  0 packages upgraded, 7 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
  Need to get 3482kB of archives. After unpacking 8475kB will be used.
  The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    postfix: Conflicteert met: mail-transport-agent which is a virtual package.
    exim4-daemon-light: Conflicteert met: mail-transport-agent which is a virtual package.
    exim4-config: Conflicteert met: postfix but 2.7.1-1 is to be installed.
  The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

       Keep the following packages at their current version:
  1)     exim4 [Not Installed]
  2)     exim4-base [Not Installed]
  3)     exim4-config [Not Installed]
  4)     exim4-daemon-light [Not Installed]

  Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] q
  Abandoning all efforts to resolve these dependencies.
  Abort.
  </cut>

  It seems to me this has something to do with the following:

  * apt-listchanges recommends "exim4" or "mail-transport-agent" (but neither "exim4-deamon-light" nor "exim4-daemon-heavy".
  * mail-transport-agent is provided by "exim4-daemon-heavy", "exim4-daemon-light", "postfix" (amongst others) but not "exim4".

  When I install a MTA (in my case "exim4-daemon-light") manually, the
  installation of apt-listchanges succeeds without any problem.
