We are in 2016, I've updated my ubuntu servers to 16.04, and there is
still this issue. Does nobody ever run a do-release-upgrade after an ssh
and an su? Just redirecting X-11 errors to /dev/null solves the issue.
Come on, I know you can do that before the "Z" release...

Title:
  do-release-upgrade without X11

Status in update-manager-core package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
when one has no X11 and does a do-release-upgrade via ssh without X11 forwarding, something keeps complaining about "X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication". While this is not such an issue, it fills the screen and makes answering the few questions asked during the upgrade problematic.
I'd suggest adding a 2> /dev/null to the application looking for X11 connection.
This was using do-release-upgrade on 11.10 to upgrade to 12.04.
