That is true, yet it tried to use the bios version of grub anyhow.  Of
course, 11.10 is end of life and no longer supported, so perhaps you
should try 16.04?

  Trying to install from a USB drive, created with ubuntu. System boots
  on EFI, installer doesn't appear to detect the EFI system and tries to
  install grub on /dev/sda, which fails and prompts the crash reporter.
