[Bug 1610774] [NEW] package initramfs-tools 0.122ubuntu8.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Public bug reported:

Seems similar to #1578762 but this error message says "initramfs-tools
0.122ubuntu8.1".  This error first appeared when attempting to upgrade
my distribution.  After the failure to upgrade which this error message
announced my system is in fairly flaky condition.  uname -a returns
"Linux <my system name> 4.4.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13
00:07:12 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux".

I will now do a fresh installation, if I can get my machine to download
16.04.1.
