I have the same problem with Mint 18 Sarah, based on Ubuntu 16.04 and Nvidia 361.42.
The logo is initially displayed, but when the animation for the "dots" starts, the logo disappears and then only the dots are displayed.

BTW: I had to update grub settings with this:

GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

Without it, the logo wouldn't display at all.
