If you are receiving daily emails, this means the download is failing to
be applied correctly; the daily email is secondary to this.

And it appears the mail is not including error output, which should be
fixed in /etc/cron.daily/update-notifier-common so that there is useful
debugging information when something goes wrong.

  Hi, 
  I've installed ttf-mscorefonts-installer, which pulled in update-notifier. Although downloading ms core fonts should be a one-time-job, and although nothing happens after initial download, that damned update-notifier sends me a daily mail with
