Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. In an effort to keep an up-to-date list of bugs to work I
have reviewed this report to verify it still requires a fix and it
occurs on a supported version of Ubuntu.

As stated above the removal was done intentionally. If you still wish to
mount a cdrom device the typically suggested way of doing this is 1) add
it manually to fstab, as originally posted by the submitter or 2) as
follows:

sudo mkdir -p /mnt/cdrom
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

It is unfortunate that we were unable to resolve this defect, however
there appears to be no further action possible at this time. I am
therefore moving the bug to 'Invalid'. If you disagree or have
additional details, please feel free to add a comment and then change
the status of the bug to 'New'.

Title:
lucid: cdrom entry is missing in /etc/fstab

Status in Ubuntu Server papercuts:
  Invalid
Status in partman-target package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: debian-installer

Since Lucid, the cdrom entry in /etc/fstab is missing. Upgrades retain
this entry and do not have this problem.

Solution after installation: add the entry in /etc/fstab if a cdrom is
present and create the /media/cdrom0 directory and /media/cdrom link

  Example in /etc/fstab:
  /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
