Some observations:
 - [Maintenance] The Debian packaging could certainly use some cleaning up / modernizing.

done.

 - [Maintenance] It would be nice to see the patches being tagged, at
least with a description.

partial, old patches not retagged... yet

 - [Maintenance] There are a few bugs open in Debian BTS, some with
patches that could easily be applied (such as debian #711703)

closed, it's been fixed upstream

 - [Security] Many binaries trigger a lintian warning: hardening-no-
fortify-functions.

fixed. Furthermore, binaries were built without optimisation, nor debug
symbols.... all fixed.
