You tried to install grub to /dev/sda1. You need to leave it set to
/dev/sda instead.
** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu)

Title:
Grub installer failed. Couldn't delete existing partitions.
Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Had several problems trying to do a clean install of Ubuntu Gnome.
Several times machine locked shortly after clicking on Try Ubuntu.
Decided to skip that and just install. Wanted to use LVM with 250 GB
SSD, then span two SATA hard drives and attach to home. Finally seemed
to get things working but GRUB install failed.
