Your disk was partitioned using an ancient partitioning tool that did
not leave enough room before the start of the first partition to install
grub when using btrfs as a root filesystem. You will need to re-
partition the disk which should not start the first partition until the
1 mb mark, leaving plenty of room for grub.

Title:
Os installation fails: grub failed to install on /dev/sda
Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
I tried installing a daily build of 16.04. Fatal error during
installation: grub failed to install on /dev/sda.
I used custom partition setup to format an existing partition as /
(btrfs) and mounting another existing partition as /home (ext4). I've
never tried btrfs as a root filesystem before, but I was feeling
adventurous. The installer gave me no indication that there may be
problems with btrfs root filesystems, but I'll try again with / as
ext4.
