comment #4 is inaccurate: it seems to be an issue with tk: the tools
fail to work until i reinstall tk8.6

  Confirmed

Bug description:
  git gui and gitk used to worked fine, but after upgrading to 16.04,
  they stopped working:

  * git gui fails with "cannot determine git version"
  * gitk fails with "cannot find a git repository here"

  other git commands work like charm
