Did you change any files on your system? Such error may happen if you
for example switched shebang of /usr/bin/pycompile to python3.

What is the first line of /usr/bin/pycompile?

What is the output of this command?
$(head -n1 /usr/bin/pycompile | sed "s/#\!//") --version
