Public bug reported:

i'm frequently getting a warning--a red triangle with a red exclamation
point inside in the menu bar next to the wireless nextwork connection
icon. The drop-down from this says that the information for software
updater is outdated & recommends selecting a menu selection below, "Show
updates." When i do that the dialog that comes says "Repository
information failed to download. i'm running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS & always
install updates whenever they're availalbe. Updater is set to check for
updates at least daily.

The wanring comes up when i've had my computer on for a while whether
it's active or not. If i hit "retry" in the dialog after the repository
information failed to download, it usually comes to the same box again.
If i click "Ok" at that point, it seems to be processing for a short
time then i get "All software on this computer is up to date." i've
tried shutting down & restarting & the red warning box goes away (it's
not there now). i've tried on a fresh start to run software updater from
the lanuch button & it typically fails to load repository information
though a couple of times it has come up with small updates. One of those
times i got a message that some updates failed to download. i haven't
had any big updates lately & they seemed to happen with some regularity
in the past so i'm concerned that i may not be getting updates i should
have. Nonetheless, my machine seems to be running fine otherwise. i
should also mention that the wanring usually appears when i'm actively
on-line though not always. The network is set to connect autmoatically
so it's pretty much always connected to the internet. The other note in
the dialog box with the "Repository information failed to donwload" is
to check the internet connection but i've gotten this in the same
session as having visited a vareity of websites, checked e-mail, read
the NY Times on line or whatever.

i'm not sure if this is a security bug, a software updater bug or a
system bug.

Thank you for whatever light you can shed on this.

p.s. i don't know if this is a security bug or not. i'm not a programmer
but the red warning raises the question of security for me.
