Grub can not be installed on /dev/sda because it has no partitions.  You
either need to create at least one partition there, or choose to install
grub to another drive instead.

  attempting to reinstall  ubuntu 16.04 on a 5 hard drive system (not
  RAID) with /dev/sda being root and WD SSD which is chosen by default
  and I am unable to format.  Need help.
