Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted
the 16.04 installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that
this could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install
instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode
install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system
partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you
choose the "use entire disk" guided install option.

Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Unique install scenario. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS being upgraded in-place to
  16.10. Booting was disabled by Windows 10 install bootloader taking
  precedence during 8.1 to 10 upgrade. GRUB EFI bootloader now errors
  out. Will attempt reinstalling 12.04 in place, but still should be
  investigated as bug, as installer crashes leaving average user
  helpless. This isn't as odd of an install scenario for someone
  refreshing both Windows and Ubuntu.
