Can you describe the reproduction steps further? It seems I too have
faced this problem.

Title:
update-java-alternatives can fail if update-alternatives lists
  multiple JVMs

Status in java-common package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I used to have both the sun-java6 and openjdk packages installed.
However, this caused problems for ant building particular packages.
Further investigation showed that the reason was that update-java-
alternatives was not able to switch the default JVM to use because a
single change had been made to javac via update-alternatives.
