  gthumb 3.4.3 under Ubuntu Mate 16.04.01 does not show a menu

Status in gthumb package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  As the attached screenshot shows, gthumb has no menu, which makes
  gthumb impossible to fully use, since various settings are only
  available via the menu.

  The screenshot shows multiple thin black rectangles between the
  toolbar and the green "Persönlicher Ordner" line. which perhaps are
  some artifacts of the no-shon menu.

  This bug seems to have come up multiple times already, but the
  previous solutions and workarounds do not work this time
