You don't need a /boot partition; you need an EFI system partition
mounted in /boot/efi.

  Boot partition primary 500 megs, root 225 gigs  swap 2 gigs  grub2
  failed to install, installer crashed and exited.

  amd 64  quad core processor 8 gigs ram, ddr3

  Ubuntu 16.04.1  DVD installer

  Chose install rather than try, then install.
