Thanks for filing this bug in Ubuntu.

Where exactly do you see these error messages about the filesystem being
read only?

I installed both packages, configured a realm, added a principal, and I
can kinit just fine, and I see the requests in the system logs:

/var/log/auth.log:Dec  6 12:25:02 04-57 krb5kdc[732]: AS_REQ (8 etypes {18 17 20 19 16 23 25 26}) 10.0.5.10: NEEDED_PREAUTH: ubuntu at MAAS for krbtgt/MAAS at MAAS, Additional pre-authentication required

Bug description:
  I am running:
  - Ubuntu 17.10
  - krb5-kdc 1.15.1-2
  - krb5-admin-server 1.15.1-2

  The following files both miss an entry in the parameter
  ReadWriteDirectories:

  /lib/systemd/system/krb5-kdc.service
  /lib/systemd/system/krb5-admin-server.service

  This yields in the following error messages:
  Couldn't open log file /var/log/krb5kdc.log: The filesystem is read only
