Dolphin, actually. I've already filed a bug on Dolphin to more
gracefully handle this case: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=381688
The reason why I filed this bug though was because it seemed easier:
Including samba makes sure that file sharing works out of the box in
both the live session--where the user would be confused by creating a
samba user for a transient account whose password they don't know--as
well as the full installation--where samba user creation can take place
in parallel with login user creation.

Title:
samba package should be included in the live session/default
installation, and create a user+passwords identical to the main user
account
Status in samba package in Ubuntu:
Opinion
Bug description:
Kubuntu 17.04
Samba 2:4.5.8+dfsg-0ubuntu0.17.04.2
Ubuntu's samba package doesn't set a samba password for the active
user once installed.
This leaves the user with a non-functional samba installation unless
the user manually runs `smpasswd -a <user>` (bad user experience) or
their GUI file manager notices this condition and does it for them
(fragmentation and inconsistency among clients).
The package's installation should somehow trigger a prompt to create a Samba password--or better yet, have Samba re-use the user's existing login password, if that's possible.
