Sorry for not answering earlier. I was running xubuntu from a usb,
installed with USB installer. I have now installed xubuntu on my hard
drive, and it runs beautifully. No problem with kpartx.

I can install it just fine and the log doesn't hold much more so I need
to fish for extra data non what might have happened this way. 
Did you kill that because it was hanging or anything like it? 

Also if you reinstall it, is the issue reproducible? 
$apt-get install --reinstall kpartx
