purging a kernel sometimes fails to remove kernel in armel

Status in initramfs-tools:

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

When purging a kernel, the links in /boot fail to get updated, which
flash-kernel depends on for updating boot partitions on armel
platforms. This may leave the system unable to boot or may continue
  to boot the purged kernel.

The following is the output from apt-get --purge:

ubuntu at beaglexm:~$ sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-image-2.6.35-24-omap

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
    linux-headers-2.6.35-22 linux-headers-2.6.35-22-omap
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
    linux-image-2.6.35-24-omap* linux-image-omap* linux-omap*
