What's the status of this? What is happening during the time this gray
screen is shown? Why does it take significantly longer to make it to the
login screen for Ubuntu Mate vs Ubuntu Server (incidentally by about the
duration the gray screen is shown)?
If I change
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
to show boot messages I see what is happening after the gray screen disappears, but I have no idea what goes on while it's there.
The gray screen covers the whole display when the GRUB_GFXMODE is commented out in /etc/default/grub, but when I set it to
GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080
The gray screen is painted in the middle of the screen on top of the GRUB bootloader screen, parts of which surrounding the gray screen are still visible, until the gray screen yields to boot messages after a delay of a few seconds.
Is all of this is normal, it's mystical to me and feels very weird. I'd
like to know what's going on. Can somebody answer this?
