Thanks for the response.  I don't know why this has failed for you; we
have seen problems with the debconf socket when using gnome-software,
but this is the first report I've seen for this particular problem with
software & updates.  It's possible that if you closed the window too
soon, the install still running in the background was unable to contact
the frontend.

To complete the install, you should be able to simply run 'sudo dpkg
--configure -a' from a terminal.
