Thanks for filing this bug in Ubuntu.

The Samba nmbd service indeed failed to start, but the attached logs
don't indicate why.

Could you please attach all the files that start with "log" in the
directory /var/log/samba?

Also, what is the current status of the samba services after you
finished this upgrade:

sudo systemctl status nmbd.service smbd.service
