After a little reading discovered I needed a 100mb UEFI partition, which
I manually created in the disks/partitioning tool. Installed Ubuntu
Artful Aardvark with the above - all working well now.

** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Fix Released

Title:
Grub Installer didnt install on UFEI system NVME M.2 Drive when
  manually doing partition setup

Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Also have an older, non UEFI version of Ubuntu 17.04 on another drive,
the install wanted to play in that drive hence the need to force it
  onto the new NVME drive.

Perhaps its the bios compatibility mode of the original OS that is
  throwing the installer.

Will try install again to see if I missed something with creating the
logical drive/partition - it did leave 1mb of free space.... I assumed
Grub would go there automatically - maybe thats my issue.

On a side note: Suggestion, in the install window, with the "Help and
Support" info pane there is red hyperlink text over purple/red
background which is VERY hard to read.

Keep up the good work :)
