Title:
grub2 does not resize or tile splash images

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:

Status in grub2 package in Debian:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub2

Background images for grub2 only display correctly if they have the
same resolution as the grub gfxmode.

If the image dimensions are larger than gfxmode, the image is
truncated. If the image dimensions are smaller than gfxmode, the
image appears in the top-left of the screen and the remainder of the
  background is black.

Is there any way that grub can be made to resize or tile the image
  instead?
