You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Fresh installation of Ubuntu 17.10.1. Apparently this new motherboard is
configured in UEFI mode. Because wanting total control of the
partitioning schema used, I chose manual partitioning in the beginning
of the installation. When installing "grub-uefi-something-whatever-64"
(cannot now verify the exact name of the package, because I cannot find
how to start terminal application in this aborted installation), it
failed due to missing UEFI system partition. When I acknowledged the
failure there was also this crash.
So I see two issues here:
1. abrupt crash of the installer
2. not warning of the missing UEFI partition before accepting the manually created partition table (in an earlier installation attempt there was a warning about swap not being encrypted and subsequent refusal to continue the installation, meaning there seems to be some other checks of similar nature in place).
