Title:
purging configuration files does not do its job

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

I just installed the package on a kubuntu 6.06 machine, with sudo
  aptitude install mozilla-thunderbird.

Executed the application ONCE, and then purged it with sudo aptitude
  purge mozilla-thunderbird.

  The result:

Purging configuration files for mozilla-thunderbird ...
rmdir: /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/chrome/: No such file or directory
rmdir: /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/chrome/: No such file or directory
dpkg - warning: while removing mozilla-thunderbird, directory `/etc/mozilla-thunderbird` not empty so not removed.

So the said directory is left there, with the file auto-config.js in
  it.

Hence. purge does not properly purge the package.
