18.10 has been fixed to install the bios version of grub instead when
this happens.

  Mate 18.04 64 grub update fails to write to g2G 1st partition on 4T

Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Trying to install Bionic Beaver Mate 64AMD to a couple 4T disks with
  32G Ext4 partition mounted at / and with a 4G swap partition and an
  extra 3.9T Ext4 partition that takes all but 30G of the rest of the
  space.

  The install OS is on a USB 32G CF card. It has been used to install to
  various other "drives" successfully.

  The 4T drives pass extended Smart tests.
