UPDATE: Seems to have been due to a hold on the following modules:
nvidia-opencl-icd-304 nvidia-current nvidia-304 nvidia-304-dev
nvidia-304-updates  nvidia-304-updates-dev libcuda1-304

I had put a hold on those modules because of bug #1642134 that affected
MythTV and Kodi (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-
graphics-drivers-340/+bug/1642134).
