Attempting an online upgrade of 16.04 Ubuntu Desktop 64-bit to 18.04 did
not go well. Initially I was prompted to make 6 GB of space available
for the upgrade but as the online process proceeded the 9GB of space I
provided was completely consumed and the upgrade left my system in an
unstable state. After some attempts to make more space the packages
that had been downloaded and mainly installed disappeared from var and
5GB of space became available.

The next problem was with authentication during startup. The login
screen showed two users: me and slurm - very clever, but somehow not
amusing. I'll be happy to help track down this bug by sending more info
and files if need be. My Ubuntu system is not startable but I can copy
files using a dual boot Fedora installation.

Another user had the same problem and reported it on the Ask Ubuntu
Stack Exchange though he didn't mention having the slurm addition to his
user list during login attempts:

upgrade-from-16-04-to-18-04

Like him I'm planning to start fresh with an .iso download of 18.04
unless someone can suggest a fix that works. Not being able to access
the Internet from recovery mode makes most fixes impossible and the
other options in recovery mode haven't helped either. Because this bug
involves the strange addition of an unknown user I've marked it as a
possible security issue.

         Status: New
