Title:
upgrade from 16.04.5 LTS to 18.04.1 LTS failed due to kernel signing
  issues and grub

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
No further information beyond what is (hopefully?) auto attached to
this bug report via an upload from the failed system (no web browser
on it so I couldn't edit the bug report from that machine).

The strange part is that there are only 3 kernels installed on the
machine, and the 2 existing prior to trying to do-release-upgrade
  *are* both SIGNED.

  -rw------- 1 root root 7163736 Aug 24 06:06 /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-134-generic.efi.signed

It's a Hyper-V VM, I had just done an apt update && apt upgrade && reboot to the machine prior to attempting the do-release-upgrade.
