Grub needs to be installed to whichever disk your bios boots from.  This
is typically /dev/sda, but it appears your drive has no partitions on
it.

  Grub tries to install to wrong boot partition and fails

Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  After installing Ubuntu with LVM to /dev/sdg. The installer still tries to install grub to sda for some reason and fails.
  I then try and install to sdg1 (boot partition) fails, then try to install to sdg5 (lvm with root and swap) also fails.
