[Bug 719112] Re: Alternate install to non-primary drive results in grub MBR error

I think there's a misunderstanding. After telling the installer to
install on /dev/sdb (and make it bootable), it asks "Can I install grub
on boot drive?" (or words to that effect) with no further details. If
you say "Yes", it installs onto /dev/sda. Not the drive you just
installed on and made bootable.

There is no hint to the user that the way around this is going back a
screen to do a semi-automatic grub install to the desired partition.

If this is working as intended, feel free to keep this closed. Perhaps
a note can be made in the documentation.

Title:
Alternate install to non-primary drive results in grub MBR error

Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub-installer

When installing 10.10 via the x86 Alternate Installer CD, with an
installation target that isn't the first drive in the system, grub
installs the MBR on the primary drive.

I have 3 drives in my system, and the BIOS is set to boot from the
second one (/dev/sdb). During the alternate install (used to create
an encrypted LVM), the installer prompts to have grub create a new MBR
on the boot drive. It then installed the MBR on /dev/sda, regardless
of what drive the OS has been installed to.

Workaround: Select Go Back to get to the installer menu, select
Install Grub in MBR on boot drive, and tell Grub to install on the
correct drive (/dev/sdb in my case).

This is a silent failure, and would be very confusing to a novice.
