You tried to install grub to your USB stick. It needs to be installed to
the hard drive.

  when 12.04 fresh install (mantained old /home partition) is almost done, it report fatal error in grub install.
  I have repeated the install 3 times, and same error here.
  in past other fresh ubuntu installs (mantained old /home partition), never had problem.
