Found a solution! :)

This is an old laptop and the latest package of the NVidia drivers was
causing problems. I set apt to hold the old nvidia-304 package. This had
a cascade problem of preventing the full upgrade. After reviewing the
logs and online discussions, I realized that it was a compatibility
problem with the held package. I then unheld it, retried the full
upgrade, and now it's working.
