Same problem after last grub package update on xubuntu 17.10, using old motherboard without UEFI. Only grub os selection menu is laggy. Text boot and tty's are nice and smooth.

  Dear Sirs,

  actually I'm using Ubuntu Mate 17.10 on a 64 bit machine.

  This is the output from "uname -a":

  I found strange behaviour after last grub2 updates, done automatically
  by using:

  "sudo apt-get update"

  "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"

  Flashing bootmenu screen with black dots is really annoying (see
  screenshots).

  I also fear side effects.

  BIOS version is latest update.
