The error in your logs was:

> update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-112-generic
> cat: write error: No space left on device
> update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-112-generic with 1.

I'm afraid this is not a bug in initramfs-tools.  You need to free up
enough space in /boot to be able to write the initramfs for the new
kernel.

  While I was running the update, there was no space on the /boot
  partition, and that finally resulted in Kernel breakage of an already
  existing version (this one).
