Your hard disk is partitioned with GPT instead of an MSDOS style
partition table, but you are booting in bios mode rather than EFI mode.
This requires the GPT disk to have a 1 mb bios_grub partition.

  Unable to intall grub

Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  This bug happened while trying to install ubuntu 16.04 from live cd
  into an external hard disk. The partition was already done. The app
  said it wasn't able to install the grub, then I tried to cancel the
  installation and in the end the bug report app opened
