It appears you were working with a USB drive and it was unplugged during
the install.  You probably have a hardware problem.

  GParted freezes during partition resize

Status in gparted package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  GParted UI becomes unresponsive after some time while resizing an ext2
  partition. This has happened to me 2 times in the last day.

  System log is filled with over 300MB of this:

  blk_partition_remap: fail for partition 5
