After reviewing main.log and some googling, I stumbled upon
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-
upgrader/+bug/1769184 in which it was suggested that "unity" might be
the issue. So I removed unity and retried, and at this point the upgrade
seems to be running. I think my main issue at this point is exactly what
is said in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-
upgrader/+bug/1769184/comments/9 (i.e. I really wish I had gotten an
warning message about unity, rather than just "aborting") but I'm okay
if you decide to close this as a duplicate of 1769184

  New

Bug description:
  I am trying to upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 and the process fails
  without displaying any error messages (it just says "Aborting") so I
  cannot troubleshoot. I have seen Bug #1775883 but I do not have any
  PPAs installed (based on   ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d    at least)

  Can you please help me debug the problem?
