Thanks for filing this bug in Ubuntu.

The logs indicate that the smbd service, part of samba, failed to start, but do not tell why:
invoke-rc.d: initscript smbd, action "start" failed.
● smbd.service - Samba SMB Daemon
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/smbd.service; disabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Wed 2018-09-05 13:59:35 EDT; 18ms ago
     Docs: man:smbd(8)
           man:samba(7)
           man:smb.conf(5)
  Process: 4464 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/smbd --foreground --no-process-group $SMBDOPTIONS (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
 Main PID: 4464 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)

Sep 05 13:59:35 Athena systemd[1]: smbd.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Sep 05 13:59:35 Athena systemd[1]: smbd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.
Sep 05 13:59:35 Athena systemd[1]: Failed to start Samba SMB Daemon.

Could you please look into the log files from /var/log/samba, and
perhaps even attach them here? They will have a better indication about
what happened.

Thanks

Title:
  package samba 2:4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.2 failed to
install/upgrade: installed samba package post-installation script
subprocess returned error exit status 1

Status in samba package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This after a reinstall of Samba. Sequence of events as follows:
  Samba share was working fine.
Upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04.
Windows desktops could still connect to Samba share, but Windows Servers (2012R2) were rejected with "incorrect password"
Tried numerous fixes, eliminated problems of interface or iptables being the culprit.
  Tried monkeying with smb.conf
Finally removed and then reinstalled Samba and started with a fresh smb.conf
As before, desktops connected, servers did not
  Rebooted
Got this error. Now nothing works.
