I installed xenial on a power8 system, using the kernel from -proposed.

Gawk was 1:4.1.3+dfsg-0.1, I did not see any crashes or core dumps upon
login?

ubuntu at modoc:~/fwts$ apt-cache policy gawk
gawk:
  Installed: 1:4.1.3+dfsg-0.1
  Candidate: 1:4.1.3+dfsg-0.1
  Version table:

Bug description:
When building fwts 19.07.00 in a VM or a chroot on Xenial ppc64el, I'm
  seeing segfaults in awk:

  ./configure: line 10171: 15840 Done $LD --help 2>&1
       15842 Segmentation fault (core dumped) | $EGREP ': supported targets:.* elf' > /dev/null

awk: cmd. line:1: (FILENAME=- FNR=1) fatal error: internal error:
  segfault

I've also seen segfaults in grep, so I think this may be a recent
  dependency change.
