I'm having the exact same issue with customizing Ubuntu's Live CD.
sudodus could you let us know what the "cruft" was that you removed to
get past this install error?
Many thanks

Title:
Tried to install into a GUID partition table, but failed
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
*****
After some more testing, I found that there was some cruft in my
persistent live system. I wiped the casper-rw partitions's upper
directory except the home subdirectory, and things started to work
again in Lubuntu daily :-)
The cruft must be leftover from previous daily editions of Xenial.
Sorry for spamming Launchpad with this bug report.
*****
During iso testing I tried to install Lubuntu i386 from the desktop
iso file into a GUID partition table, but ubiquity failed and prompted
me automatically into this bug report.
-----
I should add that before the crash, there was a warning pop up window:
ubi-prepare crashed
ubi-prepare failed with exit code 10. Further information ... If you do not, your installation may fail entirely or may be broken.
