Title:
Freetype stroker overly sensitive and mishandles fonts that don't

Bug description:
From http://code.google.com/p/libass/issues/detail?id=2
"This is a known problem with FreeType's stroker, which is used for
creating the bordered glyphs. It probably won't be easy to fix, but
I'm working on it.
The FreeType stroker is very sensitive to broken/defective fonts (e.g.
fonts that do not follow the TrueType specification) and has a few
design shortcomings (breaks when stroking leads to self-
intersection)."
Attached is an example of this bug in action. Pay close attention to
the border gaps on the glyphs.
