Thanks for posting that link on "boot-repair" . . . I think I have an older
version of it, but it didn't seem "easy" and it didn't always help out in
my multi-boot situation. But, might be worth a try. Interesting that with
a new install of ubuntu the problem reappeared, over the years if grub got
messed up often times running a fresh install would "fix" grub . . .
seemingly in this case, the opposite.
