The contents of intel-microcode is not software, but firmware, and is
executed by the hardware itself, and is not software executed by the
linux kernel at all.

Closing this as a duplicate, of the bug, which was used to justify and
promoted intel-microcode from restricted to main.

microcode packages, like firmware packages, should be in main

Title:
intel-microcode should not be in main

Status in intel-microcode package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hello!

  This Ubuntu help page
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu says "Main -
Canonical-supported free and open-source software." Since intel-
microcode is not a free and open source software it should not be in
  main.

  Same issue with amd64-microcode.

(From the same page it seems these both packages should be in
  "restricted".)

  Thanks!
