You have been subscribed to a public bug:
I chose to re-install XUbuntu rather than upgrade 18.04 to 20.04.
I loaded the Live DVD and installed mdadm.
The root FS is not on raid.
I ran the install and marked /usr/local as /dev/md0, and /home as /dev/md1.
When I rebooted after the install the system got to the Login prompt, but went no further.
I managed to boot to the root prompt, which has no network started by default.
Having started networking, I installed mdadm, and could then boot into my user.
The install process needs to install mdadm automatically if there are
raid disks in the configuration.
I do not know whether this was a problem in earlier releases as I have
not done a fresh install since introducing raid. Upgrades seem to work
as expected.
